West Malaysia offers a vibrant SOTA experience with scenic peaks and welcoming amateur radio communities. If you're a licensed amateur radio operator visiting Malaysia and wish to conduct a SOTA activation under the 9M2 Association, you’ll need to obtain a temporary operating permit in accordance with local regulations.
Licensed amateur radio operators from other countries who are visiting Malaysia — either for travel, work, or temporary stays — may apply for a temporary operating license through the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS). MARTS acts as the liaison between foreign operators and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
To apply, you’ll need to prepare the following documents:
✅ Completed Application Form
✅ Copy of Your Amateur Radio License – A clear scan or photocopy of your valid license
✅ Passport Copy – Photo page of your passport
✅ Visa (if applicable) – Include a copy of your Malaysian visa
✅ Work Permit (if applicable) – If you're working in Malaysia
✅ Letter of Endorsement – A support letter from your home country's amateur radio society, which must be a member of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)
To avoid delays, submit your complete application at least two months before your planned SOTA activation date.
📧 Submit to: secretary@marts.org.my
Once MARTS receives your application, they will coordinate with MCMC and guide you through any additional steps. MARTS will also notify you when your temporary operating permit is approved.

Once your temporary permit is approved:
Choose a summit to activate and plan your hike.
Make a minimum of four two-way contacts to qualify for activation points.
Submit your log to the SOTA Database: https://www.sotadata.org.uk/en/
You are encouraged to announce your activation on SOTAWatch and follow standard SOTA and local operating procedures.
Enjoy your time on the Malaysian peaks — and welcome to 9M2!
